THE PAGES THAT FOLLOW feature five images Christopher Kulendran Thomas produced especially for Artforum. He composed them using machine-learning technologies trained on work by other artists, a technique he also uses to prepare the PNG files that he and his assistants sometimes translate, with paint, onto canvas. The pictures here exist in a liminal state, not yet paintings but a palimpsest of accumulated histories of gesture and an imprimatura for gestures never to come.
